As cattle ranchers and graduates of the Applied Sustainable Ranching program at Thompson Rivers University, we recognize the importance of food traceability. Knowing where your beef comes from is important. Chub Lake Ranch sells grass-fed, pasture-raised weanling calves (six to seven months old) locally to producers with backgrounding and finishing operations and to families looking to raise their own beef.
Calves are born in early spring on Chub Lake Ranch from our small herd of Hereford/Angus cows. Cattle graze on pasture from spring until fall, as nature intended. In the winter they are fed hay. We have always been conscious of how agricultural practices impact our health and the environment. For this reason, we have not used pesticides or herbicides on our pastures. We continue to introduce sustainable practices to our operation. Most recently, we have begun to manage the cattle in a rotational grazing system. This system divides a large pasture into smaller sections that can be managed more carefully. Cattle are moved from one section to another before the pasture can be overgrazed. This allows the grass to recover and establish deep roots. Combined with the improved natural manure distribution of this system and natural tillage and trampling from the livestock hooves, this builds healthier soils and soil ecosystems overtime. This will encourage forage biodiversity. Healthy pastures use rain/ irrigation water more efficiently, are not subject to erosion, and are overall more resilient. Not to mention, if managed properly, grass serves as an important carbon sink.
Chub Lake Ranch values agricultural practices that contribute to good health, quality of life for livestock, and a healthier environment. Customers can feel good about buying weanling calves from Chub Lake Ranch to raise for beef for their family.
